BL Companies Doubles Down on Wilmington Expansion

Moving eight miles east from its former downtown location, BL Companies has opened a significantly larger office within the Middle Sound West development. This expansion marks a strategic pivot for the firm, which aims to triple its local headcount and diversify its services beyond architecture across the coastal Carolinas.

The new workspace, situated in a mixed-use complex built by Tribute Companies, provides the physical capacity necessary to integrate civil, structural, and environmental engineering into the firm’s Wilmington portfolio. Previously, the office operated exclusively with an architectural focus. President and CEO Carolyn Stanworth noted that the limitations of the former Castle Street office had hindered the firm’s regional growth, making this transition a vital step in attracting new talent.

Senior project manager and principal Daniel Wenzel emphasized that the added square footage allows the firm to introduce mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services to its local offerings. This broader range of disciplines is designed to better support an established client base that includes the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County, alongside national entities such as Amazon, FedEx, and Costco. As a 100% employee-owned firm, BL Companies continues to scale its presence across the region, building on its recent recognition by the Zweig Group as a 2026 Best Firm to Work For.
