Standard Chartered Consolidates European Leadership

Standard Chartered is merging its regional oversight by appointing Margaret Harwood-Jones as the new CEO for Europe and the UK, effective September 1. This move creates a unified command structure intended to streamline the London-listed bank's operations across 11 distinct markets and accelerate its regional growth strategy.

Harwood-Jones, currently the global head of financing and securities services, brings a deep background in international banking to the expanded role, having previously held senior positions at BNP Paribas and HSBC. Her appointment arrives as the bank aggressively expands its regional footprint, marked by the recent opening of a representative office in Switzerland, a new entity in Luxembourg focused on digital asset custody, and a Brussels office.

Simultaneously, the bank named Jörg Hessenmüller as chief executive for Standard Chartered Bank AG, its primary European business unit. He succeeds Nicolo Salsano after serving as the bank's European chief operating officer and chief technology officer. Hessenmüller’s career includes tenures at Commerzbank, mBank, and Dresdner Bank. Mandy DeFilippo, who oversees the bank’s operations across the US, Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, stated that these leadership changes aim to foster a more connected organization and ensure seamless execution for clients.
