Boston Dynamics’ Atlas Takes the Pitch at FIFA World Cup 2026

During the Round of 16 match at New York/New Jersey Stadium, a humanoid robot stepped onto the world’s biggest stage. Hyundai Motor Company deployed the Boston Dynamics Atlas to perform a halftime routine, marking the first time a humanoid has been integrated into a live FIFA World Cup match environment.

The appearance of the production-version Atlas, first unveiled at CES 2026, signaled a shift in how robotics are presented to the public. Rather than remaining in a controlled lab, the robot executed a series of goal celebrations inspired by professional players such as Son Heung-min and Harry Kane. Following the choreography, Atlas delivered the ceremonial match ball to the referee to commence the second half, demonstrating its ability to operate reliably within the unpredictable conditions of a live sporting event.

This performance relied on three primary technical pillars: retargeting technology, which translates human motion into robotic kinematics; reinforcement learning, used to refine movements through thousands of simulations; and whole-body control, which maintains balance during dynamic sequences. According to Alberto Rodriguez, Director of Robotics Behavior at Boston Dynamics, the training methods used for these football-inspired motions mirror the processes intended for future industrial applications. The event serves as the centerpiece of Hyundai’s “Next Starts Now” campaign, intended to bridge the gap between abstract laboratory research and real-world utility.
