Easing First Day Nerves Through a Teacher’s Lens

Drawing on three decades of classroom experience, retired educator Anne Gigi McCrory addresses the universal anxiety of the first day of school in her new picture book, "Who’s Ready?:…For the First Day of School." The narrative shifts the focus from individual apprehension to the collective effort of school communities.

The story follows the night before school starts, using gentle rhyme and hand-drawn illustrations to capture the transition from summer break. McCrory depicts the familiar home rituals of packing lunches and choosing outfits alongside the unseen labor of custodians, teachers, and cafeteria staff preparing for the morning bell. By illuminating this work, the book aims to shift a child's perspective from solitary worry to a sense of shared anticipation.

"I wanted children to know that even if they feel nervous or unsure, there are so many people working hard to make school a welcoming and joyful place for them," McCrory noted. Her approach treats the classroom not just as a site of academic learning, but as a community space where adults and children navigate transitions together. Available now through Balboa Press, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble, the book serves as a tool for parents and caregivers to bridge the gap between summer relaxation and the routines of the academic year. This release marks the second installment in the author's series, which plans to tackle further childhood milestones.
