The Irving-based manufacturer confirmed the deal on July 7, 2026, marking a strategic pivot toward data-driven automation. Denise Johnson, group president of Caterpillar Resource Industries, stated that the integration will allow operators to manage both staffed and autonomous fleets with greater predictability. By generating near-real-time spatial views, the technology aims to bridge the gap between initial site planning and daily extraction execution.
Caterpillar Acquires Skycatch to Boost Mining AI and Spatial Data
Caterpillar Inc. has acquired spatial data specialist Skycatch to sharpen the digital precision of its mining operations. By folding Skycatch’s high-frequency mapping and AI analysis into its existing MineStar and RPMGlobal software, the heavy equipment giant aims to provide miners with a real-time digital twin of their excavation sites.
Skycatch brings a decade of experience in high-precision data capture, which Caterpillar plans to layer directly into its current software ecosystem. Richard Mathews, CEO of RPMGlobal, noted that this capability enables miners to adjust operations dynamically as site conditions shift. For the mining industry, the shift promises to reduce delays and improve overall site safety by ensuring that decision-makers rely on current, high-resolution data rather than static models.
