The organization’s latest data highlights a 20% increase in roles accessible to workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) compared to the previous year. This shift toward skills-based evaluation is becoming increasingly critical as artificial intelligence begins to automate recruitment and applicant screening processes. By integrating Davis—an expert in enterprise transformation—the board aims to ensure that AI systems prioritize actual capability over the "paper ceiling" of formal credentials.
LaFawn Davis Joins Opportunity@Work Board to Advance Skills-First Hiring
LaFawn Davis, the former Indeed executive who navigated the workforce without a traditional degree, has joined the board of the nonprofit Opportunity@Work. Her appointment arrives as the organization scales its efforts to dismantle degree-based hiring barriers, a mission that has already opened nearly 600,000 jobs to non-degree holders.

Beyond the board appointment, the group expanded its STARs Advisory Council by 12 members, bringing the total to 19. This council, chaired by LaShana Lewis, ensures that workers directly impacted by hiring bias help shape the organization’s strategy. According to Byron Auguste, CEO of Opportunity@Work, the goal is to leverage AI as a tool for intentional inclusion rather than a mechanism that reinforces outdated pedigree requirements. Since 2022, 90,000 STARs have achieved upward career mobility, a trend the nonprofit intends to accelerate as it pushes toward a broader goal of boosting annual earnings for millions of workers by the end of the decade.
