Most traditional CAD systems struggle to support modern machine learning because they lack the structured, real-time data needed to interpret design intent. Onshape’s cloud-native architecture captures every decision as it happens, providing the context required for AI to learn from previous work. By embedding these tools directly into the engineering environment, PTC intends to move beyond simple assistance toward active participation in the design process.
PTC Launches Onshape Labs to Embed AI into Engineering Workflows
Product development is shifting from isolated AI tools toward integrated systems, prompting PTC to launch Onshape Labs. This new early-access program allows engineers to test emerging AI capabilities directly within their cloud-native CAD and PDM workflows, aiming to turn design data into actionable automation and improved decision-making.

Participants can currently access features like AI Quick Render, which generates high-quality visuals in seconds, and workflows connecting CAD assets to NVIDIA Isaac Sim for robotics simulation. Upcoming additions include AI-powered drawing checkers for standards compliance and a FeatureScript MCP server that enables text-to-CAD geometry creation. David Katzman, EVP of Onshape and Arena at PTC, noted that engineers require tools that understand their specific product data rather than disconnected add-ons. The company plans to expand access later this summer, allowing users to opt into these experimental features through their platform preferences.
