The TG600 will serve as the core of the EL9’s propulsion system, delivering 600 kW of electricity. Developed from Safran’s existing Arrano engine, the unit is designed to cut fuel consumption by 18% compared to previous generations. It also integrates two GENeUS electric generators supplied by Safran Electrical & Power. Safran successfully completed initial bench testing at its Bordes facility in July, preparing the hardware for the aircraft's planned flight tests.
Electra Partners With Safran to Power EL9 Hybrid-Electric Aircraft
Electra and Safran Helicopter Engines have finalized a life-of-program production agreement for the TG600 turbogenerator, a critical component for Electra's upcoming EL9 Ultra Short aircraft. The deal includes an initial order for 250 units, signaling a major push toward commercial entry by 2030.

Electra’s EL9 relies on blown-lift technology to achieve takeoff and landing distances as short as 150 feet, a capability intended to open regional air travel to locations previously inaccessible to commercial flights. The company has already submitted the aircraft for FAA Part 23 certification, with a maiden flight targeted for late 2027 or early 2028. Following a 2023 memorandum of understanding, this production contract solidifies the supply chain required to meet Electra's projected demand for thousands of regional shuttles over the next decade.
