American Water Expands Talent Pipeline Through Career Development Programs
As the U.S. water industry grapples with a tightening labor market, American Water is launching a series of initiatives aimed at securing its future workforce. The utility company is targeting talent at every stage of the career lifecycle, from high school students to seasoned professionals seeking technical advancement.

Beyond entry-level recruitment, the utility is investing in localized training infrastructure. A new facility in West Virginia provides a space for both new hires and veteran staff to master water system maintenance through simulated, hands-on environments. These efforts are supplemented by the Water Utility Pipeline program and a partnership with the nonprofit Hopeworks, which focuses on training young adults in geographic information systems. According to Lori Sutton, the company's executive vice president and chief human resources officer, these investments are essential to maintaining reliable services for the 14 million people the utility currently serves.
