PowerPlay AI Targets 400 MW West Texas Data Center Hub
In a move to bypass grid-locked interconnection queues, PowerPlay AI has launched a 400 MW behind-the-meter data center project near Abilene. The development, managed through a joint venture with a Nasdaq-listed partner, leverages direct natural gas access to fuel the next wave of massive AI infrastructure expansion.

Luke Velterop, representing PowerPlay AI, identified energy access as the primary bottleneck for the industry, noting that traditional grid connectivity timelines now extend into the 2030s. By securing behind-the-meter capacity, the firm intends to deliver operational compute power by 2028. The location sits within a growing corridor of high-capacity AI campuses, positioning the facility to attract major hyperscalers who require immediate, scalable power solutions to meet surging computational demands.
