Padel Investors Bet on the Next Racquet Sport Boom

With one million American players already on the court, padel is rapidly positioning itself as the successor to the pickleball craze. The sport, which blends elements of squash and tennis within an enclosed glass-walled frame, has seen the number of public facilities quadruple to 1,000 in just three years.

Entrepreneurs are pouring capital into the infrastructure required to scale the game. David Gutstadt, a former Equinox executive, has launched Ballers with locations in Philadelphia and Boston, while Kith founder Ronnie Fieg has integrated courts into an exclusive Manhattan club where memberships reach $45,000 upfront. These figures reflect the high barrier to entry, as a single court costs roughly $50,000 to construct.

Despite the significant overhead, investors are chasing the trajectory of pickleball, which scaled from 4 million to 24 million domestic players since 2020. The Pro Padel League recently secured $15 million in funding and established a broadcast presence on CNBC, signaling that the sport is moving from a boutique hobby toward a mainstream commercial enterprise.
