Alabama Power Expands Board with Engineering and Consulting Veterans

Tom Hand and Mike Kemp, Sr. have joined the Alabama Power Board of Directors, bringing decades of regional leadership in infrastructure, engineering, and business consulting to the state’s primary utility provider.

Jeff Peoples, chairman, president, and CEO of Alabama Power, announced the appointments this week, citing the pair's strategic expertise as a key asset for the company’s future operations. The utility, a subsidiary of Southern Company, currently serves 1.6 million customers across Alabama.

Tom Hand, the current chairman and CEO of Volkert, Inc., brings extensive experience in the engineering and construction sectors. His background includes service on the board of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama and an appointment by Governor Kay Ivey to the executive committee of Alabama's Workforce Board. Hand’s professional footprint spans numerous state and national industry organizations, including the Business Council of Alabama and the Construction Industry Round Table.

Mike Kemp, Sr. joins the board with a reputation for growth management as the founder and CEO of the KMS Family of Companies. His consulting work covers 16 states, and his leadership has been recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal, including a Top 40 Under 40 award. Kemp also maintains board seats at First Horizon Bank and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Alabama, alongside active roles with the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and the United Way of Central Alabama.
