A new outdoor "mini-city" in Gary, Indiana, is set to open this fall, serving as a specialized training hub for the water industry. The $1.8 million facility allows field workers to practice complex utility tasks—from water main repairs to confined space procedures—in a controlled, real-world environment before heading into the community.
During a preview visit on July 24, U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan and Indiana American Water President Barry Suits emphasized the importance of the investment for regional infrastructure. The project reflects a broader push to ensure long-term reliability for the 1.5 million people served by the company in Indiana. According to Suits, the facility bridges the gap between theoretical training and the daily demands of maintaining public health and water quality across the Northwest Indiana region.
