The historic University of Michigan golf course, a century-old design by Alister MacKenzie, remains under investigation after all 18 greens were doused in an unidentified orange substance. While public safety officials have confirmed the incident as an act of vandalism, the motive behind the July 4th strike remains entirely unknown.
This incident follows a similar pattern of sabotage in the region. In 2023, the private Detroit Golf Club suffered significant damage when an intruder applied glyphosate to two of its greens, necessitating an expensive re-sodding project just before a PGA Tour event. Sam Moynihan, the club’s director of agronomy, noted the financial strain such attacks impose on facilities, emphasizing the difficulty of identifying perpetrators who target these vulnerable landscapes.
