Plata Adds Former SEC Commissioner and U.S. Diplomat to Board

Plata is bolstering its governance as it scales across Latin America, appointing former SEC commissioner Michael S. Piwowar and veteran diplomat John J. Sullivan to its U.S. holding company board. Effective August 1, 2026, the additions signal the firm's intent to anchor its rapid growth in regulatory and institutional rigor.

The appointments come as the financial holding company moves to solidify its regional footprint. After launching full banking operations in Mexico this past March, Plata recently secured authorization from the Financial Superintendency to begin activities in Colombia. Managing a customer base of 4 million active users and a workforce of over 5,000, the company aims to leverage the new directors' expertise in global financial markets and national security to navigate its complex expansion.

Neri Tollardo, co-founder of Plata, noted that the move reflects a long-standing commitment to operational discipline. Michael Piwowar, currently executive director of the Georgetown Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy, brings extensive experience in securities regulation, including a tenure as acting chairman of the SEC. John J. Sullivan offers a four-decade background in public service, having served as U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation and Deputy Secretary of State. Both appointees expressed support for the company’s focus on building a compliant, technology-driven banking platform as it continues to scale.
