During winter, poor airflow allows interior heat to escape into the attic, melting snow on the roof surface. This cycle creates ice dams—heavy ridges of ice that trap water and force it beneath the shingles, causing internal leaks. Bishop notes that balancing attic temperatures is the only way to mitigate these damaging formations.

Summer heat presents a different set of challenges. Without adequate ventilation, trapped hot air forces cooling systems to work harder, driving up utility costs and straining HVAC equipment. Furthermore, excess moisture in the attic environment can lead to significant issues like wood rot and mold growth. By ensuring a steady flow of air, homeowners can extend the lifespan of their roofing materials and avoid the costly, often invisible, damage caused by trapped condensation.
