Tara Polar Station Begins 18-Month Scientific Drift in Arctic

The Tara Polar Station has embarked on a landmark 18-month drift expedition into the Central Arctic Ocean, marking the start of a two-decade research program. To minimize the environmental footprint of this mission in one of the planet's most sensitive regions, the drifting laboratory is powered by Neste MY Renewable Diesel.

The expedition serves as the inaugural chapter of a 20-year scientific initiative involving 30 international research institutes. Designed to operate in extreme conditions, the station will spend 90% of its voyage locked in sea ice. Because the vessel cannot refuel while adrift, the reliability of its energy supply is a mission-critical factor. The crew took on 90,000 liters of renewable diesel in the Netherlands to power generators and heating systems, supplementing the station's wind and solar energy infrastructure.

Romain Troublé, Managing Director of the Tara Ocean Foundation, noted that the vessel’s energy systems were engineered specifically for renewable fuel to ensure both efficient combustion and a reduced carbon footprint. The station, equipped with six laboratories, will monitor the rapidly changing dynamics of the Arctic, a region currently warming three to four times faster than the global average. By providing data on biodiversity and ocean health, the mission aims to supply policymakers with empirical evidence regarding the impact of climate change on the Arctic's role as a planetary cooling system. The fuel, which remains functional at temperatures as low as -32°C, acts as a direct replacement for fossil diesel in the station’s existing engines.
