Matterworks Opens PyxisLabs to Industrialize Predictive Biology

Somerville-based Matterworks is launching PyxisLabs, an AI-driven laboratory designed to bring biochemical omics to the life sciences at the speed and scale of DNA sequencing. By deploying its proprietary Pyxis co-scientist, the company aims to move biology from empirical trial-and-error to a predictable, data-driven discipline.

The new facility utilizes the Matterworks LSM-3 model, which has been trained on over 10 billion spectra across millions of distinct molecules. This architecture allows for the direct machine interpretation of lipids, small molecules, peptides, and proteins, effectively mapping the biological exposome. According to CEO Jack M. Geremia, the goal is to create a scientific intelligence capable of reading multiple layers of biology to forecast specific outcomes.

PyxisLabs offers two primary avenues for engagement: organizations can license the Pyxis software to interpret data from their internal high-resolution LC-MS instruments, or they can submit physical samples directly for de novo chemotyping. Executive Vice President Fadi Abdi noted that the service is intended to demystify biological "dark matter," providing researchers with the quantitative depth needed to identify novel mechanisms. While initial services focus on small molecules and lipids, the company plans to expand its capabilities to include comprehensive peptide and protein analysis in upcoming releases.
