The latest data from IFI CLAIMS Patent Services highlights a concentrated race to secure intellectual property in autonomous systems. Agentic AI, which allows software to execute complex tasks independently, has seen U.S. patent grants jump 14 percent year-over-year and 70 percent since 2021. Applications for these technologies have surged even faster, rising 40 percent in the U.S. over the past year and 137 percent globally compared to 2023. Lily Iacurci, senior marketing manager at IFI CLAIMS, described the current landscape as a fully formed patent storm where agentic AI now commands 15 percent of the total AI patent domain.
Global AI Patent Grants Surge Past 100,000 Milestone
Worldwide artificial intelligence patent grants reached 107,279 in 2025, marking an 83 percent increase over the last three years. While the broader category of U.S. AI patents saw a slight decline of 7 percent, the industry has shifted its focus toward the rapid development of agentic and generative technologies.
Corporate strategies regarding these inventions remain fragmented. While Samsung leads the global volume of AI filings with 2,162 applications, other prominent innovators favor alternative protection methods. OpenAI filed only 27 U.S. applications in 2025, while companies like Deepseek and xAI hold no AI-related patents in the U.S. or globally. Nvidia has emerged as the clear leader in the agentic niche, securing 128 U.S. applications, outperforming industry giants like Microsoft and Google in that specific category.
