New Anthology Spotlights Latina Power Brokers in Illinois Policy

The anthology emerged from a 2024 initiative Ramírez launched to connect Latina professionals working in government affairs. What began as a modest Women's History Month gathering in Springfield has expanded into a network of over 40 professionals. The book serves as a public record of careers forged in education, health care, and economic development, highlighting the perseverance required to influence public policy when one is frequently underestimated.

Ramírez, founder of the Chicago-based firm Zerimar Strategies, notes that while Latina representation in the Illinois General Assembly has grown since 2017—with Latinas now holding 12 of the 18 Latino seats—the path remains difficult. The contributors include state representatives such as Dagmara Avelar, Eva-Dina Delgado, and Barbara Hernandez, as well as lobbyists and policy consultants. Many stories center on the immigrant experience, tracing how family sacrifice fueled the drive to claim seats at decision-making tables. By detailing the tactical realities of coalition-building and political gatekeeping, the collection functions as both a historical account and a roadmap for the next generation of civic leaders.
