Two years ago, system administrators predicted a wave of full automation across their workflows by 2026. Today, reality has hit: only 16% have implemented AI for patch management, leaving human oversight firmly in place for critical infrastructure and security tasks that carry high risks if left to algorithms.

The latest survey from Action1, which polled over 1,000 administrators globally, highlights a stark divide between early ambition and current practice. While 67% of respondents previously expected full automation for patch management, actual adoption remains a fraction of that figure. Similar trends appear across server monitoring and vulnerability prioritization, where implementation rates hover near 20% despite expectations that were triple that size.

Gene Moody, Field CTO at Action1, notes that the industry is shifting toward a supervised model. Administrators are increasingly comfortable using AI to filter noise or provide recommendations, but they refuse to cede control over production systems. Data privacy and accuracy concerns remain the primary barriers for 74% of respondents, with many fearing the potential fallout of an incorrect decision on access controls or system stability. Consequently, AI is finding its strongest foothold in advisory roles—such as log analysis and troubleshooting—rather than in executing direct changes to the network.
