American Rheinmetall to Develop Autonomous Logistics Fleet for U.S. Army
The U.S. Army has awarded American Rheinmetall an 18-month contract under Project Sustainment to field hybrid-powered, autonomous ground vehicles. Tasked with delivering load-handling capabilities for frontline operations, the prime contractor will lead a technical coalition to modernize logistics and reduce human exposure in high-risk, contested environments.
By automating the transport of supplies to forward-deployed troops, the program aims to shift the cognitive burden of logistics away from human operators. Jim Schirmer, VP of Sales and Marketing at American Rheinmetall, stated that the project directly addresses the Army’s modernization requirements by increasing operational readiness. The current contract includes provisions for follow-on production, positioning the partnership to scale its fleet as the military continues to refine its autonomous logistics strategy.
