As extreme weather events intensify, experts are questioning the wisdom of continuing to build homes primarily with wood-frame materials.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warns of rapid storm intensification, yet domestic housing trends remain largely unchanged. While concrete, brick, and stone are standard in many developed nations, the U.S. construction industry persists with lighter, more combustible materials. This reliance leaves millions of homeowners increasingly exposed to fire and wind damage, prompting a push for more resilient alternatives such as reinforced concrete masonry units (CMU).

James Cain, president of the Southeast Concrete Masonry Association, argues that building standards must evolve to reflect current climate realities. Protecting a family’s primary financial investment requires a shift toward materials capable of resisting heat and embers, which can prevent neighborhood-wide fire propagation. To bridge the gap between design and durability, the Concrete Masonry Checkoff launched the Block Design Collective in 2025. This initiative provides architects and engineers with free technical guidance to integrate masonry into modern residential projects, aiming to simplify complex code compliance and help builders prioritize long-term safety over traditional construction methods.
