The insurer posted earnings of $0.80 per share, supported by a $3.5 million rise in investment revenues. While policyholder benefits increased by $2.6 million, the company successfully offset these costs through reduced operating expenses. Last year’s quarterly figures were distorted by a $45 million legal settlement accrual related to class action litigation; when adjusted for that one-time charge, the company’s year-over-year quarterly income still grew by 14%.
Kansas City Life Rebounds to Profit in Second Quarter
Kansas City Life Insurance Company reported net income of $7.8 million for the second quarter of 2026, marking a sharp recovery from the $28.7 million loss incurred during the same period last year. The turnaround follows the absence of significant legal settlement costs that heavily burdened the company's 2025 financial results.

For the first half of 2026, net income reached $17.3 million, or $1.79 per share, compared to a $24.6 million loss in the first six months of 2025. This six-month performance was driven by a $5.3 million boost in investment income and a 4% reduction in operating expenses, even as insurance revenues saw a slight 1% decline. Headquartered in Missouri and operating across 49 states, the firm continues to prioritize its core business of life insurance and annuity sales.
