The fund launched in 2024 with $100 million in backing from high-profile tech investors, initially riding a massive wave of enthusiasm for AI-adjacent startups and data center infrastructure. At its peak, the firm’s assets ballooned to $30 billion, fueled by aggressive bets on the sector’s explosive growth. However, the strategy crumbled when the broader AI market reversed sharply.
AI Hedge Fund Prodigy Leopold Aschenbrenner Loses 73% of Assets
A 73% plunge in asset value has humbled Leopold Aschenbrenner, the 24-year-old former OpenAI researcher once hailed as the ‘Nostradamus of AI.’ His hedge fund, Situational Awareness, found itself caught in a violent market correction that nearly forced a total liquidation of its portfolio earlier this month.

Goldman Sachs, acting as a primary lender, triggered a crisis by demanding immediate repayment of outstanding loans. Facing a liquidity crunch, Aschenbrenner spent 30 hours frantically offloading $20 billion in stock to stay solvent. A deal brokered during an early morning call with Kenneth Griffin allowed Citadel to acquire a significant portion of these assets at a steep discount. While the fund avoided total collapse, it finished the ordeal with $8 billion remaining, a staggering decline from its mid-summer peak.
