Beth Ann Lively Named 2026 Legacy Feature by The Inner Circle

Lively spent over fifteen years shaping the English curriculum at IPS Key Learning Community, an institution she helped establish. Her approach moved away from rigid Catholic education standards toward exploratory methods that prioritized student writing and artistic expression. These creative models eventually gained traction beyond the local district, influencing broader educational practices. Her influence was not limited to middle school settings; from 1986 to 1993, she served as an adjunct professor at Indiana University in Indianapolis. During this tenure, she contributed to writing instruction programs that garnered international attention, including successful implementations in Thailand.

Her path to the classroom was unconventional, encompassing roles as a water safety instructor and a house parent for juvenile delinquents. These experiences provided her with deep insights into adolescent development, which she later applied to her work with students. Since her retirement in 2012, Lively has remained active as a writer, musician, and community volunteer. She authored a chapter on the Key School in the book The Lights Are On, Is Anybody Home? and continues to perform as a cantor. Today, she maintains her lifelong commitment to engagement by managing a family farm and pursuing creative projects.
