The first half of 2026 marked a pivotal turn in consumer behavior, as interest in electric vehicles dipped to 10% compared to 11% a year prior. In contrast, hybrids reached a new popularity peak. Toyota dominated this electrified segment, claiming five of the top 10 spots, while the Honda Accord Hybrid and Mazda CX-50 Hybrid made significant debut appearances. This trend is mirrored by the dominance of SUVs, which hit record consideration levels of 71% in the non-luxury market and 79% among luxury buyers.
Hybrid and SUV Demand Surge as Shoppers Prioritize Value in 2026
With 22% of car buyers now eyeing hybrid models, the automotive market is shifting toward fuel efficiency and utility. The latest Kelley Blue Book Brand Watch reveals a record-breaking preference for SUVs, even as economic pressures force shoppers to become increasingly selective about their next vehicle purchase.

Despite a narrowing field of top-performing manufacturers, Kia and Subaru emerged as the only non-luxury brands to see growth in shopper consideration. Subaru’s momentum was fueled by interest in the Crosstrek and Forester Hybrid, while Kia capitalized on demand for value-oriented SUVs and the Carnival minivan. In the luxury sector, Audi stood out as the sole top-tier brand to record year-over-year improvement, buoyed by renewed interest in its A3 and A5 sedans. Honda maintained its industry lead, ranking highest in nine of 12 key purchase drivers, including affordability, driving comfort, and durability.
