The Northeast and Midwest dominated this year’s list for the fourth consecutive year, effectively shutting out the South and West. While national housing inventory remains roughly 11.3% below pre-pandemic levels, the competition in these top 10 markets is far more severe, with supply shortfalls reaching 60.5%. Listings in these high-demand areas attracted up to 5.3 times more views than the national average, with properties selling between 30 and 42 days faster than the broader U.S. market.
Peabody, Massachusetts Named America's Hottest ZIP Code for 2026
Peabody, Massachusetts, has claimed the top spot in Realtor.com’s 2026 ranking of the country’s hottest ZIP codes, signaling a definitive shift as homebuyers prioritize space and established neighborhood character over lower price tags, even when it requires enduring longer commutes to major job centers.

Buyers in these regions are also demonstrating significant financial strength. Across the top 10 ZIP codes, the average down payment reached 17.1%, compared to the 13.1% national norm, while median credit scores averaged 766. Hannah Jones, senior economist at Realtor.com, noted that these buyers are well-capitalized and willing to pay a premium for homes that offer extra square footage. In places like Montclair, New Jersey, homes averaged 2,625 square feet—nearly 86% larger than the surrounding metro area's typical listing. This trend underscores a broader market preference for established, walkable communities located roughly 10 to 20 miles from central business districts.
