Canela Media Unveils New Framework for Hispanic Audience Engagement

For decades, marketing to U.S. Hispanic audiences relied on blunt demographic markers like language preference or country of origin. A new proprietary study from Canela Media challenges this approach, identifying six distinct cultural mindsets that suggest identity is far more fluid and contextual than traditional labels imply.

Canela Media Unveils New Framework for Hispanic Audience Engagement

The research, based on a survey of nearly 2,000 Hispanic viewers, moves away from generational or acculturation-based silos. Instead, it categorizes consumers into six specific cohorts—ranging from Cultural Preservers to Cultural Reactors—defined by how they integrate their heritage into daily routines and media habits. Paula Baldwin, VP of Brand Partnerships at Canela Media, argues that cultural identity is deeply connected to emotional needs, making traditional segmentation models increasingly obsolete.

Data from the study highlights a shift in consumption patterns, noting that 61% of respondents favor free, ad-supported streaming platforms. Furthermore, 87% of those surveyed indicated that they trust brands more when they demonstrate a genuine understanding of their community rather than merely using the correct language. With 81% of respondents reporting bilingual capabilities despite preferring Spanish for the survey, the findings suggest that language is a contextual tool rather than a fixed identifier. The company plans to present a full analysis of these cohorts during an August 17th session titled The New Hispanic Playbook for Brands.
