Appian and Synechron Launch AI Architecture for Insurance Underwriting

Insurance carriers struggling with legacy systems now have a pathway to modernize underwriting without the typical multi-year overhaul. Appian and Synechron have unveiled a joint reference architecture, the Open Underwriting Stack, which layers AI-driven process automation and open data foundations over existing core insurance platforms.

The collaboration integrates Synechron’s InsureMESH—a data-first operational layer—with Appian’s process orchestration and AI agents. By decoupling transaction events from fixed legacy sequences, the stack allows carriers to deploy AI and modern SaaS applications while maintaining their current core systems, such as Guidewire or Duck Creek. This approach aims to reduce operational friction and accelerate digital transformation, enabling carriers to process transactions and act on risk signals in real time.

Unlike traditional modernization projects that demand complex integrations and lengthy deployment cycles, this architecture provides a configurable application layer. It ensures that data remains accessible for functions like billing or rating while keeping underwriters in control. According to the companies, the stack provides the governance necessary for strict regulatory environments, ensuring that every AI-driven decision remains traceable and auditable. Demonstrations of the technology were recently showcased at InsurTech Insights New York, highlighting how connected operations are shifting the industry toward parallel, rather than sequential, workflows.
