R-IT3 Patents Green-Chemistry Platform for E-Waste Metal Recovery

Charlotte-based R-IT3, Inc. has filed four provisional patents for a closed-loop system that extracts precious metals from electronic waste and converts them into high-purity nanomaterials. The technology sidesteps traditional smelting, aiming to reshape the economics of data center waste while supplying the solar and pharmaceutical sectors with engineered gold particles.

The patent portfolio covers a proprietary deep eutectic solvent (DES) process that functions at room temperature. By eliminating high-temperature activation and reducing landfill residue, the company claims it can recover gold, silver, palladium, platinum, and copper with greater environmental efficiency. The filings span from the initial reclamation of raw feedstock to the final synthesis of medical-grade functionalized gold nanoparticles.

Peter Jegou, founder and president of the Charlotte-based B Corporation, describes the filings as a singular, continuous platform rather than isolated inventions. The company intends to leverage this intellectual property to strike supply agreements with data centers. By deploying this recovery technology on-site, R-IT3 aims to help these facilities offset capital expenditures and energy costs through the monetization of their electronic waste. The patent strategy, managed by lead attorney Ani Agrawal of NK Patent Law, marks a transition for the firm from simple reclamation into the production of specialized advanced materials.
