The policy shift aims to curb the rapid spread of automated spam and low-quality content generated by artificial intelligence. Tech consultant Emil Protalinski noted that while the move is a setback for aspiring creators close to the current limits, it represents a strategic attempt to filter out channels flooding the site with AI-scripted videos and static imagery. Existing partners already enrolled in the program will remain unaffected by the upcoming changes.
YouTube Doubles Monetization Thresholds for Creators
Starting February 1, 2027, YouTube will require creators to amass 8,000 watch hours annually or 20 million Shorts views over 90 days to unlock monetization. This aggressive hike doubles the current requirements, effectively resetting the bar for new channels aiming to earn revenue from the platform’s ad and subscription programs.

Despite the rising barrier to entry, YouTube remains a lucrative outlet for established creators. Erika Kullberg, a personal finance expert, has highlighted that YouTube consistently outperforms other social platforms in payouts, netting her over $353,000 between 2019 and 2024. Kullberg, who transitioned from corporate law to full-time content creation, emphasizes that the path to monetization requires significant persistence and financial runway. She advises newcomers to treat the platform as a long-term commitment, noting that her own journey involved balancing a demanding legal career with a rigorous weekly posting schedule.
