The project involved installing eight massive, solid-fill dolphin cells, each measuring 80 feet in diameter, to shield the bridge's structural integrity from modern commercial vessels. Supported by a $22.25 million federal BUILD grant, the system reached substantial completion in late 2025. DRBA Executive Director Joel Coppadge noted that the investment ensures the bridge remains resilient for the millions of travelers and commercial carriers relying on the route daily.
Delaware Memorial Bridge Marks 75 Years and New Safety Upgrades
More than 200 officials and community members gathered at Veterans Memorial Park in New Castle to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Delaware Memorial Bridge’s first span. The milestone ceremony also marked the official completion of an $89 million ship collision protection system designed to safeguard the vital regional crossing.

Reflecting on its history, the bridge has evolved from a single four-lane span, which opened in 1951, into a twin-span crossing that now handles approximately 36 million vehicles annually. To honor the human cost of that early construction, officials dedicated a Sweet Tea tree to the six workers who lost their lives building the original span. The event also recognized long-term users Dorothy Ray and Marta Smith, who were honored as the longest-tenured E-ZPass discount holders from Delaware and New Jersey, respectively.
