DARPA Funds Qunnect to Stabilize Quantum Data on Commercial Fiber

Quantum information is notoriously fragile, often failing when transmitted across standard telecommunications cables. Brooklyn-based Qunnect has now secured a DARPA contract to refine its Carina system, a proprietary technology designed to shield quantum signals from environmental interference and noise while operating on existing, real-world fiber-optic infrastructure.

The Carina platform functions much like noise-canceling headphones for data, utilizing a polarization compensation module to continuously monitor and correct signal corruption in transit. By stabilizing these delicate photonic states, Qunnect has successfully anchored quantum networks across diverse urban environments, including New York City, Albuquerque, and Berlin, the latter in partnership with Deutsche Telekom. This latest funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency aims to accelerate the next iteration of the hardware, ensuring the system remains resilient against the temperature shifts and vibrations inherent in municipal fiber networks.

CEO Noel Goddard emphasized that the company’s focus remains on practicality, moving quantum connectivity out of controlled laboratory settings and into the field. As governments and private firms increasingly categorize quantum networking as essential infrastructure, Qunnect’s ability to run on legacy cables provides a distinct advantage over experimental alternatives. With this DARPA support, the company intends to bridge the gap between initial proof-of-concept demonstrations and reliable, scalable networks capable of supporting future secure communications.
