The company’s proprietary system relies on what it describes as reversible rusting. While conventional lithium-ion cells provide power for short bursts, these iron-air batteries can discharge energy for 100 hours straight. This capacity provides a critical buffer for electrical grids during prolonged events, such as severe winter storms.
Form Energy Secures $750 Million to Scale Iron-Air Battery Production
Turning the chemical process of oxidation into a power source, Form Energy has secured $750 million in new funding. The startup utilizes iron and air to create long-duration batteries, a technology now backed by over $2 billion in total investment to address the energy demands of modern data centers.

Capital from the latest round will accelerate manufacturing at the firm’s facility in Weirton, West Virginia. The expansion coincides with a surge in demand, as the company’s project pipeline has grown from 20 to 80 gigawatt-hours this year. Among the first commercial deployments is a 300-megawatt installation for Xcel Energy, designed to support a Google data center in Minnesota. This rapid scaling reflects the broader pressure placed on power grids by the escalating energy requirements of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
