HD Hyundai and TerraPower Advance Natrium Reactor Commercialization

Bill Gates and HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Kisun convened in Seoul on August 14 to accelerate the deployment of Natrium-based nuclear technology. This executive-level summit marks a significant step in the trilateral partnership with Hyundai E&C, aiming to revitalize the U.S. power market through advanced small modular reactor systems.

The meeting represents the first high-level gathering since the signing of a trilateral memorandum of understanding this past May. The collaboration leverages TerraPower’s proprietary sodium-cooled fast reactor technology, with HD Hyundai overseeing the manufacturing of essential components and Hyundai E&C providing engineering, procurement, and construction support.

HD Hyundai is currently refining its supply chain strategy, targeting an annual production capacity of two to three reactor vessels. This move aligns with the increasing necessity to replace aging U.S. nuclear infrastructure, much of which dates back to the 1970s. Beyond replacement needs, the surge in electricity demand from U.S. data centers has intensified the urgency for stable, next-generation energy solutions. Having secured status as the preferred bidder for key equipment in May, HD Hyundai is now scaling its investment in production facilities to meet these commercial milestones.
