Since commissioning its first factory in 2012, the company has methodically tracked its environmental footprint using the proprietary Carbon Chain Management System (CCMS) launched in 2022. This data-backed approach enabled a 28% reduction in energy consumption per unit compared to 2022 levels, alongside a 77% drop in carbon emission intensity. Between 2023 and 2025, CATL eliminated over 10 million tons of CO₂ equivalent, a figure the firm notes is roughly equal to Brunei's total annual national emissions.
CATL Reaches Carbon Neutrality Milestone, Shifts Focus to Supply Chain
With all 20 of its battery plants now certified carbon neutral, CATL has officially hit its 2025 core operations target. The company is now pivoting toward an ambitious 2035 goal to achieve full value-chain neutrality, signaling a strategic transition where decarbonization serves as a core driver for future growth.
To reach its 2035 target, CATL is shifting its focus to the supply chain, which currently accounts for over 80% of its total product lifecycle emissions. Starting in 2027, the company will mandate that suppliers provide comprehensive carbon footprint data, using these metrics to influence procurement decisions. Through its new Green Procurement Guidelines, CATL plans to prioritize partners who demonstrate strong low-carbon performance, while simultaneously launching a joint empowerment initiative with 30 core suppliers to drive innovation in green materials, logistics, and battery recycling via its subsidiary, Brunp Recycling.
