Karmanos Cancer Institute Extends Public Seminar Series in Detroit
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is returning to the Detroit Public Library this fall for its 2026 Community Conversations on Cancer series. The program offers residents direct access to physician-scientists and researchers, with three remaining sessions scheduled from September through November to discuss modern oncology and health equity.
Dr. Kirsten Purrington opens the fall slate on September 9 by examining the biological factors behind breast cancer disparities among Black women. The series continues on October 21 with Dr. Hadeel Assad and Dr. Hasan Korkaya, who will address the challenges of treating aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. The final session on November 18 features Dr. Heather Gibson, who will explore how individual patient genetics influence the efficacy of immunotherapy. Beyond education, the organizers hope these events will encourage attendees to participate in research advocacy. Registration is required for all sessions, which are available to the public at no cost.
