Wells Fargo commits $1.5 million to modular housing in rural Iowa

At the Iowa State Fair, Wells Fargo unveiled a $1.5 million investment aimed at curbing the national housing shortage through Habitat for Humanity. The funding targets the expansion of modular construction, a factory-built approach designed to accelerate build timelines and lower costs in underserved rural and small-town communities.

The capital is split into two primary streams: $1 million will support Habitat for Humanity International’s national efforts to scale innovative building techniques, while $500,000 is earmarked for the Greater Des Moines affiliate. This regional funding will specifically bolster affordable housing projects in central Iowa towns like Perry and Indianola. By shifting construction off-site, Habitat aims to circumvent logistical hurdles and labor shortages that often stall traditional projects.

J. Edwin Hensley, director of U.S. construction at Habitat International, noted that modular homes serve as a critical supplement to traditional building models, providing a scalable solution for diverse geographic markets. Beyond new construction, the partnership emphasizes housing preservation, with Wells Fargo employees recently constructing wheelchair ramps to help residents age in place. The collaboration builds on a three-decade history between the two organizations, which have collectively facilitated over $105 million in support for sustainable housing since 2015.
