Researchers at Cincinnati Children's and the University of Alabama at Birmingham have identified that indigo light, a short-wavelength component abundant in the sun but absent in most white LEDs, plays a critical role in eye health. In a study published in Cell Reports Medicine, the team demonstrated that exposure to indigo light prevented the eye from elongating in tree shrews, an animal model that shares significant anatomical similarities with humans.
Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing distant objects to blur and increasing the risk of serious complications like glaucoma and retinal detachment later in life. While previous studies in mice highlighted the importance of the light-sensing receptor OPN5, researchers found that humans and tree shrews require slightly longer wavelengths—between 419 and 446 nanometers—to activate this pathway, as our lenses naturally filter out shorter ultraviolet light.
