The latest CLA Heartbeat Index, which polled 722 clients across the U.S., signals an end to the era of experimental AI spending. While 72.2% of respondents express confidence in their organization’s outlook, only 20.2% report highly positive impacts from their current tech stack. This disconnect has prompted a pivot toward rigorous accountability, where leaders are now prioritizing governance, data quality, and workforce readiness over simple adoption.
Small Business Leaders Shift Focus from AI Adoption to ROI
Nearly three-quarters of small and middle-market business leaders remain optimistic about their economic prospects for the coming year, yet a widening gap exists between AI investment and actual performance, with fewer than half of surveyed organizations reporting meaningful efficiency gains from their recent technology expenditures.

Jen Leary, CEO of CLA, noted that business leaders are becoming increasingly disciplined about their capital allocation. The primary challenge has shifted from the pursuit of new tools to the practical integration of existing systems. As organizations grapple with rising labor and material costs, the ability to demonstrate tangible productivity gains has become the new benchmark for competitive advantage. According to James Watson, Chief Solutions Officer at CLA, the current market is entering an "AI accountability moment," where future success depends on turning digital investments into quantifiable business outcomes rather than mere operational overhead.
