Rudong Wind Farm Hits 10 Billion kWh Milestone

The 800 MW Rudong offshore wind farm in Jiangsu Province has officially crossed the 10 billion kWh threshold in total power output. This milestone underscores the effectiveness of Asia’s first offshore wind project to utilize VSC-HVDC technology, a complex transmission system designed to move massive energy loads to the mainland.

Central to this achievement is the offshore converter station manufactured by ZPMC. Commissioned in 2021, the facility employs ±400 kV VSC-HVDC technology to maintain grid stability while transmitting electricity from deep-sea turbines. When completed, the station stood as the largest of its kind globally, boasting the highest voltage rating for any offshore converter installation.

The environmental impact of this generation is substantial. The output equates to roughly 3 million tonnes of standard coal, effectively preventing 7.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Operated by China Three Gorges Renewables, the project remains a benchmark for long-distance offshore power transmission in the region.
