9/11 Day Awards $3 Million for Nationwide Service Projects

As the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaches, the nonprofit 9/11 Day has launched a $3 million grant program to mobilize service projects across 40 states. The initiative, central to the upcoming UNIITE for Good campaign, aims to engage over 70,000 volunteers in local community-strengthening efforts.

The funding, provided in collaboration with AmeriCorps and the Popeyes Foundation, targets roughly 200 schools, universities, and community organizations. More than 70% of the total grant money is earmarked for youth-led initiatives, reflecting a strategic focus on connecting a generation born after the 2001 attacks to the legacy of collective resilience that followed the tragedy.

Projects supported by these grants range from food insecurity programs and care kits for first responders to neighborhood revitalization efforts. By integrating hands-on service with historical reflection, organizers hope to shift the focus of the anniversary from the initial tragedy to the spirit of unity that emerged in its aftermath. The effort is designed to provide practical, localized volunteer opportunities that address modern community needs while honoring the victims and survivors of the attacks.
