PCORI Funds Clinical Studies to Bridge Information Gaps in Patient Care

Patients and clinicians often navigate treatment choices without sufficient comparative data. To address this, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute has launched a new funding initiative supporting clinical effectiveness research across emergency, hospital, and outpatient settings, aiming to translate scientific findings into practical, everyday healthcare decision-making.

The newly announced portfolio includes 29 awards spanning diverse health concerns, from cardiovascular disease and cancer to rare conditions and pediatric care. Executive Director Nakela L. Cook emphasized that these projects prioritize evidence that reflects individual patient needs and preferences, moving beyond theoretical data to improve actual health outcomes. Among the 12 primary research studies, investigators will compare blood transfusion protocols for traumatic injuries, evaluate medication strategies for alcohol withdrawal syndrome, and assess the efficacy of low-dose ketamine in managing chronic pain following orthopedic surgery.

Beyond direct clinical trials, the institute is investing in methodological rigor and implementation. Ten awards focus on refining how research is conducted, particularly regarding patient engagement, while seven projects are dedicated to integrating past findings into routine clinical practice. These implementation efforts range from expanding hearing care access in rural schools to optimizing hypertension management and improving telehealth support for perinatal mental health. All funded projects are currently pending final contractual agreements, marking a significant step in the organization's congressional mandate to empower patients through comparative effectiveness research.
