Why Paying Just the Minimum Credit Card Balance is a Financial Trap

Nearly half of American credit cardholders are trapped in a cycle of debt by paying only the minimum amount due each month. According to a new LendingTree survey, 41% of users rely on this habit, a practice financial experts warn is a maintenance strategy rather than a path to repayment.

Why Paying Just the Minimum Credit Card Balance is a Financial Trap

The consequences of this approach are severe for the average borrower, who carries a $7,756 balance. With current average APRs hovering around 20.94%, sticking to the minimum payment can extend a debt cycle for nearly 27 years, ultimately costing the cardholder approximately $13,000 in interest alone. Despite the high stakes, 44% of surveyed cardholders admitted they do not even know the interest rates on their accounts.

Certified financial planner Corinna Rose of Bell Investment Advisors notes that while minimum payments keep accounts in good standing, they rarely touch the principal. For younger consumers, the situation is more acute; 58% of Gen Z cardholders report making only minimum payments, compared to 19% of Baby Boomers. Experts suggest that if a borrower cannot pay their balance in full, it serves as a critical signal to pause spending, re-evaluate their budget, and stop using credit cards until they regain control of their finances.
