Stewart brings nearly 30 years of financial services experience to the role, including a deep background in enterprise risk management, regulatory frameworks, and market risk modeling. His appointment marks a transition for the consortium, which has grown into a national hub for applied analytics and practitioner-focused training since its 2023 launch. Smith School Dean Prabhudev Konana noted that Stewart’s long-standing involvement with the program, which includes hiring Smith graduates and participating in the annual CRO Risk Summit, makes him uniquely qualified to guide the consortium through its next phase of expansion.
John Stewart Named Director of UMD Smith Enterprise Risk Consortium
The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business has appointed former BECU Chief Risk Officer John Stewart as the new Director and Executive-in-Residence for the Smith Enterprise Risk Consortium. Stewart, an original member of the hub’s advisory council, succeeds Clifford Rossi in leading the industry-facing risk management organization.

With a Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering, Stewart combines technical modeling expertise with executive judgment—a blend that aligns with the consortium’s focus on solving real-world problems. His mandate includes expanding the network of corporate partners, which already features institutions like JPMorgan Chase, Nasdaq, and AWS. The consortium currently offers executive education in areas such as AI governance, climate risk, and supply chain resilience. SERC Risk Fellow William Longbrake, who has worked with Stewart for three decades, emphasized that the incoming director’s technical rigor and industry experience are vital for maintaining the school’s momentum in risk governance.
