Evan Kung Saves Elite Series Career with Record-Breaking Victory

Entering the final event of the 2026 season ranked 72nd in points, Kung needed a high finish to secure his spot on the tour for 2027. He navigated the pressure by balancing a conservative strategy to maintain his ranking with aggressive targeting of trophy-sized fish. His winning performance not only kept his career alive but also earned him a place in the prestigious Bassmaster Century Club and a qualification for the 2027 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic.

Throughout the four-day event, Kung rotated between the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, focusing on smallmouth bass suspended 20 to 40 feet deep near rock structures and current breaks. A prototype Great Lakes Finesse Vibra Bug lure, rigged on a drop-shot setup, accounted for 90 percent of his catch. The final day proved pivotal; despite challenging wind and rain, Kung secured a 6-13 smallmouth that anchored his final limit and pushed him past runner-up Trey McKinney, who finished with 107-9.

While Kung celebrated his first blue trophy, the event also marked a milestone for McKinney. The 21-year-old from Carbondale, Ill., finished the week by securing the Angler of the Year title, becoming the youngest person to ever claim the honor. The tournament, hosted by the 1000 Islands Clayton Chamber of Commerce, saw nine of the 10 finalists cross the 100-pound threshold, highlighting the exceptional productivity of the St. Lawrence fishery.
