HEDEGAARD Blends Ancient Chinese Folk with Modern Electronica

Danish producer HEDEGAARD spent two months trekking 7,200 kilometers across Western China, working alongside the Western China International Communication Organization to document the music of ten ethnic groups. The resulting documentary and companion album, KINΔ, reinterprets endangered vocal and instrumental traditions through a contemporary electronic lens.

The project spanned from the Qinghai-Xizang plateaus to the rainforests of Xishuangbanna, capturing rare sounds like the Adu High-Pitched Melody and the Mongolian Tobshur. Director Feng Xiaolou guided the production, emphasizing the need for authentic engagement over simple sampling. HEDEGAARD spent his time learning ancient techniques directly from heritage bearers, a process he described as listening until the musicians trusted him with their soul.

This collaboration produced ten episodes and an album titled KINΔ, a play on the words "China" and "kin." Tracks like "Drumroll," which reworks Tujia Luo'er Tunes, and "Monolith," a meditation on Xizang Layi love songs, highlight the project's focus on cultural preservation. Art critic Xue Jinwen noted that the work succeeds by replacing cultural extraction with a process of equal dialogue.

The initiative gained significant traction following its July 27 release, amassing 25.8 million views overseas. The project’s climax arrived at Chongqing’s Guotai Art Center on July 26, where HEDEGAARD performed live alongside Dong children and Mongolian throat singers. By integrating traditional instruments with real-time electronic synthesis, the performance brought the digital documentary into a shared physical space, signaling a new approach to globalizing local heritage.
