Medtronic Invests $700 Million in Hong Kong’s Cornerstone Robotics

Medtronic is pouring approximately US$700 million into Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for the Hong Kong-based firm’s Sentire surgical system in select international markets. This strategic alliance aims to bridge the global gap in minimally invasive care, where robotic-assisted surgical adoption currently remains in the single digits.

The capital injection allows Medtronic to bolster its existing surgical portfolio, positioning the Sentire system as a complement to its proprietary Hugo platform. Cornerstone Robotics, which maintains a vertically integrated R&D model, has spent years developing its own hardware, control software, and imaging platforms to ensure supply chain stability and high-fidelity performance in operating rooms.

Since its inception, Cornerstone has focused on full-stack development, managing everything from advanced algorithms to manufacturing within its own facilities. This approach has already yielded regulatory results: the Sentire system secured National Medical Products Administration approval in China in 2024, followed by the CE Mark in the European Union and authorization from Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority in May 2026. These clearances cover a broad spectrum of general, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic procedures.

Professor Kwok Wai Samuel Au, founder and CEO of Cornerstone Robotics, stated that the partnership will accelerate the company's ability to scale its technology to surgeons and patients globally. For Medtronic, the agreement represents a push to expand its footprint in the competitive robotics space, leveraging Cornerstone’s infrastructure to reach markets where demand for advanced surgical technology has outpaced current supply.
