As GPU-intensive AI workloads trigger volatile power spikes that threaten traditional infrastructure, Sacramento-based LiCAP Technologies has unveiled a new rack-level ultracapacitor system. Designed to respond to sub-second energy transients, the hardware aims to bridge the gap between instantaneous demand and long-term backup power for modern server environments.

The rapid surge in AI computing has outpaced the response times of conventional uninterruptible power supplies and batteries. These standard systems often struggle with the sharp, high-power cycles characteristic of modern data center demand. LiCAP’s solution targets these millisecond-scale disturbances, offering a system capable of over one million cycles with an expected service life exceeding 15 years.

Richard Qiu, President of LiCAP Technologies, noted that the industry’s primary challenge has shifted from total backup capacity to the frequency and speed of infrastructure response. By managing peak shaving and voltage sag, these ultracapacitors mitigate the mechanical stress placed on primary power feeds and generators. The systems are built using the company’s proprietary Activated Dry Electrode technology, which removes the need for NMP solvents and reduces internal resistance. Each rack-level unit is customizable to specific voltage and physical integration requirements, featuring an integrated Cabinet Management System for real-time health monitoring.
